Lanzarote is the most easterly Island of the Canaries, boasting a landscape of warm colours carved by volcanic activity to explore. With year round sunshine and a relaxed atmosphere, it really is a hot spot for a great holiday.
It”s capital is Arrecife, which has a lovely selection of shops and restaurants. Starting in the middle of the Island, where things are pretty hot, is the Timanfaya National Park, where you can find the Montanas del Fuego (Fire Mountains). Try the restaurant here, where you can enjoy meat and fish cooked on a volcano-fuelled barbeque using 300o of heat from it”s core. Another amazing site is the Jameos del Agua (a network of lava tubes) at the foot of the Monte Corona in the North East. It is a series of underground grottoes, which has been artistically enhanced by Senor Manrique. You can find swimming, gardens, a dance floor, bars and a fantastic hall for concerts. Towards the coastline, Playa Blanca has a lovely Marina and a promenade of shopes, cafes and restaurants. From here, you can catch a ferry to Fuerteventura or a boat to Papagayo Peninsula.
Playa de los Pocillos has a calm sea and pretty horeshoe beach.
For more activity, Costa Teguise boasts 5 beaches, watersports galore – from diving to windsurfing (it is host to World Tournaments for windsurfing) and other activities including mountain biking and a bike safari. It is also home to the Costa Teguise golf course. There is a great weekly market here too – be prepared to haggle. The Canaries are duty free so it is worth a look for a great prices.
Puerto Calero is a small Yachting harbour, with bars and restaurants. This is where sea enthusiasts can take boat trips or hire a craft for deep sea fishing or relaxing on the waves. Nearby, Puerto del Carmen has more vibrant nightspots, being the Island”s liveliest resorts. It also has a fantastic choice of cuisine.
